Fire It Up Solo (Black Label Society Cover) for the EMG Zakk Wylde Shred 2010 Contest

My old video for the Zakk Wylde EMG challenge back in summer 2012. Played ‘Fire It Up’ off of 2005’s Mafia album. Thanks for watching!

Black Label Society – Fire it up (live 2005)

Black Label Society plays fire it up (live 2005)

What are the best pickups for an electric guitar? I have an Ibanez art2ex1. I want it to be able to have good distortion. I really want it to have the sound of a band calledThousand foot krutch. They play a song called fire it up, if you know the song that’s the kind of sound I want (especially on the solo). I would like to keep the price under 200 but I’m open to any suggestions. Thanks

Pickups aren’t all that matters, a processor works wonders like you wouldn’t believe. I would go with an RP90 or above, you can make your own custom settings. However I’ve heard that EMG Humbuckers are good and last awhile, I had some on my older jackson before it got stolen from me. It’s very unlikely to get the exact sound as a certain band, partly because they use very expensive processors and top of the line guitars. Here’s a link to a pair of 6-string humbuckers: cgi.ebay.com/EMG-EMG-ZW-Zakk-Wylde-81-85-Humbucker-Set-/200581527423?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item2eb397377f

I had the EMG 81/85 Zakk Wylde pups in my gold top and didn’t like them. Too sterile sounding. It’s hard to beat a good set of Seymour Duncan’s in my opinion. I like the ’59 in the neck and Pearly Gates in the bridge. I have no idea who the band is you’re referring to so I can’t say if this combination would give the desired sound or not. Even if you had the exact guitar their guy plays you still wouldn’t have his tone without all of the rest of his gear, his technique and his sound engineer or producer. Not trying to be a buzz kill just don’t want you to have unrealistic expectations of what new pups will do for you.

Most of your tone comes from your amp, so a good amp would be best. But if you already have a good amp then best pickups you can get IMO are going into the handwound pickups E.g. Bareknuckle, WCR, RockMonkey, Shed Pickups, Bulldog Pickups etc.
