Gatsby’s American Dream: Reading The Great Gatsby Critically, Chapter 1

In which John Green discusses the first chapter of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby, including thoughts on the role that the ideas of the self-made man and the American dream fuel the beginning of the novel. Themes, metaphors, and symbols are all discussed–although hopefully not in that boring and unlikable way you all find so reprehensible. Discuss the book! yourpants.org In the first chapter, our narrator Nick Carraway introduces us briefly to Gatsby before taking us to an awful dinner with the unhappily married Buchanans, Tom and Daisey, who live in great wealth and misery on East Egg. Middle East Crisis within 3-4 months & Dollar Collapse: Lindsey Williams Predictions – 21/10/2010

The long awaited war in Iran is coming followed by the collapse of the US dollar but keep your eyes on Russia and China as things begin to degenerate. Do you believe that the main reason the US is in Iraq is to gain more influence in the Middle East? I have a very strong feeling that it is to ensure that the US has a foothold in the Middle East and to divide the countries in the Middle East more. The main tactic has always been divide and conquer and this appears to be what is happening at the moment. Also, it appears that pushing Iran towards Iraq was a way to divide the Middle East while making a new “ally” in the Middle East.Yet another idea is that eventually there will be a Middle Eastern Union of some type and that will need to be with responsible countries so Iraq was the perfect candidate to start with since its country has always been so divided between Shiites and Sunnis in power and control and population.I hope I communicated this question and details correctly and easily to the reader.Question asked June 21, 2008

Your thinking is quite good, but the real question is why do we wish to gain more influence in the middle east? And why would we start a war to gain that influence? Especially since the start of that war has generated more hatred for the U.S. then at any other time in history in that part of the world. Since the first gulf war, we have established military bases in Saudi Arabia. Kuwait, and now Iraq, and if things hadn’t got so bad in Iraq, we would have bases in Iran right now.-What is the common thread that all these countries have in common- they are all members of the OPEC oil cartel Long range planning of the United States- when the oil supply starts running low, the U.S will be poised to take the oil fields over. Good , sound , strategy!
Yes, I suspect you are right.
Read Noam Chomsky “Failed States” for background. The US, since WWII, has created the most powerful military force in the world. Strategic planners know that they have no advantage when using deplomacy, however, they have a big advantage when using force and threat of force.Clearly corporations, media, the pentagon, weapons makers, contractors, executives, and corporate investors are making a killing. Most other people lose.

The main reason is pure and simple. OIL The only major political division in the Middle East is Israel versus the others. Bush’s war push /entry into the Middle East was under false pretenses and with a determination to succeed where his Daddy failed. Just imaging the reaction if a country decided that the US needed a regime change? The attitude of the US in relation to many aspects of its foreign policy is the cause of rising oil prices and world instability. .This is new underground warfare. Some Arab countries are allies for arms but keep the taps turned down.

What’s a strong introduction for an international experience essay? I am writing an admissions essay about my international experience.I have lots of it, I travelled, studied, worked in diverse places including the US, Europe, Middle East and Africa.I already wrote the whole essay. My problem is I can’t find an introductory sentence to captivate the reader and make him want to continue.Any suggestions on how I can creatively start this essay??Thanks!
You’ve already written the essay? It would have been helpful if you had shared that with Yahoo – because saying that you have had lots of experience and worked in diverse places doesn’t give much information for an opening statement of any sort, much less a strong introduction.

You could start with describing a certain experience and how it has affected who you are. For example, I would describe a day you met someone or a location.
