A Scott Kay ring will be the same quality regardless of where you actually purchase it from, right? Both K. Norris Jewelers and Robbins Bros. at the Tyler Mall, Riverside, CA carry Scott Kay.Robbins Bros. quoted me their suggested retail price. K. Norris said they would beat the price by $1,100 on the same ring. K. Norris offers a lifetime warranty that covers everything EXCEPT loss/theft. I asked K. Norris if their warranty would cover (1) replacement of the center diamond if it cracked, and (2) replacement of the center diamond if the mounting broke and the diamond fell out — K. Norris said yes to both.I called back Robbins Bros., and the rep said that the quality of the Scott Kay ring may not be the same — that RB demands higher quality. He also said that if they lowered the price on the ring, then they would NOT be able to offer me their warranty. RB’s warranty covers loss/theft for 1 yr and covers the center diamond for a lifetime.Hmm, a Scott Kay ring shouldn’t vary from store to store, right? Is it better to buy from a big chain like Robbins Bros.?

Do you think Scott Dixon will carry the #1 next season on his car? or do you think the IRL is trying to identify its drivers with their numbers similar to NASCAR? Personally I love the last years champion driving the #1 the following season. It is an honor to have the #1 in my eyes. (heck, I would love to see NASCAR have the previous seasons champion run the #1 also)
I’m pretty sure the rule in IRL is that the champion has the option of taking #1 or sticking with their old number. I believe Dixon did take the #1 when he won the championship before. I don’t think there are any marketing particulars that would make it undesirable to keep the #9 (ie. Tony Kanaan with his 7-11 sponsorship for car 11).I agree with you, to be driving car #1 as champion is an honour and should be viewed that way. Sometimes I get a bit tired of NASCAR talking about the car numbers like they are some sort of entity unto themselves.
I agree with you about the champ using the #1, and they do have that option. However the car owner has a big say in what number goes on his/her car. I’m sure Chip would let him, but don’t hold your breath.
I believe the answers above are accurate. I believe the IRL gives the series championship team owner & driver the option of driving with the #1 number through the next season. Now – I think the problem with number changing (and yes, I remember the days of both IndyCar and NASCAR champions running #1) is that the car number is almost as important in marketing as the driver and sponsor. However, please note – it is the *team* that retains the rights to car numbers, not the drivers. Look at all the hooptaloo when Dale Jr. switched from #8 to #88 – you thought the NASCAR would implode.OK, back to subject. I’m not sure what Ganassi would say about the number change. I think he’d be open to the idea, though. #1 hasn’t been run in IndyCars in a while – might be something nice to bring back with unification. If Dixon *were* to take the #1 car number, then Ganassi’s 2009 stable would be #1/#10 (which is a good car number mix for a team – see Vision: #2/#20), and would still retain the #9. If this were the case, then it also gives Ganassi an “in” to using the #9 at the Indy 500 for Alex Lloyd.Personally, I doubt we’ll see the #1 used for a while. It’s the nature of the marketing beast. We know our drivers, and consistency with driver name, driver number, driver sponsor is key to selling merchandise, esp. from a team as big as TCGR. Now – to be honest – if a smaller team (ie Panther, RLR, NHLR, or even Vision) were to win the championship, I don’t think there’d be as much hesitation to flash that #1 into the Big-3’s faces to say, “Gotcha!”. But – hey – you never know. Here’s to hope!
Yes, it’s a “bragging right.” All champions do have the option to have the #1 on the car and they almost always do. They still always retain the rights to the normal number of the car.
I wish he would. I’ve been a racing fan since back when they called them the “National Champion” (LOL) and have always thought carrying No. 1 on the car the next year was really cool and a great honor. Carrying the No. 1 on your car has a great tradition in open-wheel racing in this country at all levels and I wish they would bring that back to the IRL, especially now that the series is unified. On another number matter, I would like them to carry over the CART/Champ Car retirement of No. 99 in honor of Greg Moore. Not that he was the only one to ever lose his life in a race, but it was a great gesture given his talent and popularity with the fans and his fellow drivers.
