Melissa Etheridge Refuses to Pay Taxes Over Gay-Marriage Ban. Your thoughts? Responding defiantly to the passage of California’s Proposition 8, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter suggested in a blog post on The Daily Beast that she will not pay her state taxes in protest of the gay-marriage ban, People reports. Etheridge writes that if she’s not “allowed the same right [to marry] under the state constitution as any other citizen . I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes, because I am not a full citizen.” Etheridge announced in October that she and longtime partner Tammy Lynn Michaels intended to legally marry after a California Supreme Court decision allowed for same-sex marriage. (The couple exchanged vows at a commitment ceremony in Malibu in 2003.) As such, she joined celebs like Brad Pitt, Ellen DeGeneres and Mary J. Blige in opposing the constitutional amendment to overturn the court’s ruling. Now that the amendment has passed, Etheridge may have missed her chance, and hundreds of gay couples, including George Takei and Brad Altman and DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, could have their unions retroactively invalidated. Despite the temporary setback, Etheridge, a long time gay-rights activist, seems prepared to continue the fight. “Gay people are born everyday,” she writes. “You will never legislate that away.”

Good for her! Maybe I shouldn’t pay my taxes since I’m not a full citizen of this country either. California is in debt anyway. Maybe half of the state should stop paying their taxes. That will make them think twice.

Almost half of California voted No on Prop 8. If that half stopped paying taxes they could possibly force the state to change its views. It’s worth a shot!

I think that sounds cool to do. Get enough of people not to pay their taxes, which in turn helps pay the government so they can eat their steak dinners, drive fancy cars and live in mansions and then they will have to pass a law for gays and lesbians to marry. They would starve on macaroni and cheese like us.

Like Cassie said shes great and I respect her a lot. Its really cool that shes doing that although she may get in trouble with the law.

There is power in numbers, and it might work. Hit them where it hurts. All of the state of California needs to join in though. Good for her. I respect a person that can stand up for her convictions. This is her life.Good night darlinglol Tara J.

I agree. Good for her. If she isn’t entitled to the same rights then she should not have to pay the same taxes. But the truth is she will get into trouble if she doesn’t pay. This whole case is very unfortunate. I feel like marching along with them.

i think that is very ignorant of her. im just a single straight girl but what if i say oh well im single i sholdnt have to pay taxes either. She needs to get over herself. shes got the money to do it anyway. we cant always have what we want

I certainly admire her wanting to take a position, but this is not going to work. The only way she can stop paying taxes in California is to move. She sounds like she thinks she has no rights in the state. She has the exact same rights as she would have in almost every other state.Unfair as it may seem to her, unfair as this may be, she still has to pay her taxes or they will prosecute her, her in particular to make an example of her. You really do have to pay your taxes, even if you think you are not being treated fairly under the law.

I understand and agree to a point – but sometimes, some people (especially celebrities) go a little beyond the means of normalcy.

What are your thought’s about Melissa Etheridge’s response to Prop 8 being passed? You HAVE to read this!? Here’s what she said:”Okay. So Prop 8 passed. Alright, I get it. 51% of you think that I am a second class citizen. Alright then. So my wife, uh I mean, roommate? Girlfriend? Special lady friend? You are gonna have to help me here because I am not sure what to call her now. Anyways, she and I are not allowed the same right under the state constitution as any other citizen. Okay, so I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen. I mean that would just be wrong, to make someone pay taxes and not give them the same rights, sounds sort of like that taxation without representation thing from the history books.Okay, cool I don’t mean to get too personal here but there is a lot I can do with the extra half a million dollars that I will be keeping instead of handing it over to the state of California. Oh, and I am sure Ellen will be a little excited to keep her bazillion bucks that she pays in taxes too. Wow, come to think of it, there are quite a few of us fortunate gay folks that will be having some extra cash this year. What recession? We’re gay!Oh and too bad California, I know you were looking forward to the revenue from all of those extra marriages. I guess you will have to find some other way to get out of the budget trouble you are in.”Do you agree? Disagree? Why?
Disagree, she already has the rights allotted to her as a US citizen, cannot be legally discriminated against for race, religion or sex, under the constitution. Any other provisions can be provided for with a good lawyer and all her money.
